FAQs
Why would my child need sedation dentistry?
Sometimes dental visits can feel a little scary, especially for young kids. Sedation helps kids relax so the dentist can complete treatment more comfortably and quickly. It’s a great option for wiggly kiddos, those who get nervous, or those who need extra help sitting still.
Is sedation safe for my child?
Yes! Dr. Tsang carefully chooses the best sedation option based on your child’s age, health, and needs. Our staff stays with your child the whole time to ensure they’re safe, happy, and doing well.
Will my child fall asleep during treatment?
Nope! Most of the time, kids stay awake but feel really calm. We want them to feel cozy and comfortable without being too sleepy.
What Is Pediatric Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry for kids uses safe, mild medications to help children relax during dental care. These methods are gentle and carefully monitored by Dr. Tsang and our team. Whether your child feels nervous, needs a longer visit, or has special healthcare needs, we’re here to help make their appointment a breeze.
We keep things fun and friendly from start to finish — from kid-sized chairs to silly sunglasses and lots of smiles.
Why Sedation Helps Kids Have Better Dental Visits
We understand that the dentist’s office can seem a little big and unfamiliar. That’s why we use sedation to make things feel easier and more fun.
With pediatric sedation, we can:
- Help nervous children feel brave and calm
- Make longer appointments feel shorter
- Support children with sensory or developmental needs
- Make tricky treatments easier for little ones
A positive visit today helps your child build confidence for tomorrow’s checkups!
Types of Sedation We Offer for Kids
Dr. Tsang offers two kid-friendly sedation options to make each visit smoother and more relaxing.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
This is our most common option — and lots of kids call it their “giggle gas.” It’s a sweet-smelling gas that your child breathes through a little nose mask. In just a few minutes, they’ll feel relaxed, silly, and ready for anything!
- The gas wears off quickly after treatment, so your child can get back to school or playtime the same day.
- It’s safe, gentle, and great for routine care like cleanings or fillings.
Oral Sedation
For kids who need a bit more help relaxing, the dentist may prescribe a small liquid medicine to take before the appointment. It helps your child feel very calm and cozy — like taking a nap without falling asleep.
- Your child will stay awake but feel relaxed and maybe a little dreamy.
- You’ll get instructions ahead of time to help your child prepare and recover comfortably.
Getting Ready for a Sedation Appointment
Before your visit, we’ll discuss what your child can eat, when to arrive, and how to help your child feel ready. We make sure every step is easy to understand so there are no surprises.
Our friendly team will greet you with big smiles and guide your child every step of the way. We also love answering questions — even the silly ones!
What Happens After the Appointment?
After sedation, most kids feel a little sleepy or wobbly for a bit. That’s totally normal! Dr. Tsang and our staff will give you clear instructions to help your child rest and feel great afterward.
We usually suggest:
- A cozy afternoon with cartoons or books
- Soft snacks and lots of water
- Extra cuddles and comfort from you!
