The first week of August marks the International Week of Breastfeeding!

Breastfeeding practices vary by culture and region and are widely encouraged in Canada by doctors.

In addition to being part of the overall postpartum process and being an invaluable chance to bond with a newborn, breastfeeding can help both mom and baby in a variety of ways.

For instance, one prime advantage for newborns includes nurturing a healthy gut microbiome—meaning healthier bacteria in your digestive system. This has been linked to reductions in complications like infant gastroenteritis and hospitalization, among other things

As well, breastfeeding also lowers the incidence of respiratory diseases and ear, nose, and throat infections in infants, which researchers have linked to mothers’ ability to pass on immunity to their children (which is a process called “passive immunity”). Breastfeeding also helps with jaw development, infant obesity, and metabolic syndrome.

For mothers, breastfeeding contributes to postpartum well-being by weight loss, decreasing the occurrence of breast and ovarian cancers, type 2 diabetes, and postnatal depression. It also lowers the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular pathologies.

Although breastfeeding is generally recommended, it may not come as naturally as you might think. Latching issues, sore nipples, engorgement, mastitis are a few common difficulties that can tint this wonderful and rewarding experience.

The benefits, however, for a child’s dental health are quite clear. In fact, breastfeeding until the age of one does not increase risk of cavities; the practice actually helps reduce your baby’s risk of diseases like obesity, diabetes, and SIDS. Studies found that the practice could even help children develop healthy “bites” in their primary teeth.

Some studies do point to the fact that children who are breastfed beyond the age of 12 months do demonstrate an increased risk of cavities. But studies do not always take into account contradictory factors such as eating habits of the mother or infant (frequent feeding throughout the night, number of meals per day, introduction to other solid and sweet foods, dental hygiene, or the sociocultural context of mother and child.

After all, the choice to breastfeed (or not!) is a holistic one that should take into account the support system, the mother’s health, and the individual child.   Guilt should not play a role in your choice to breastfeed. If you are having a hard time breastfeeding, there are many resources that can help.

  1. Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs): International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) are professionals who specialize in breastfeeding support and education. They have undergone specialized training and certification to assist mothers with breastfeeding challenges.

  2. Public Health Nurses: Public health nurses often provide breastfeeding support and education to new mothers through local health units or community clinics.
  3. Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs): CLCs are certified professionals who provide breastfeeding support and education, similar to IBCLCs but with a different certification.
  4. Maternity and Postpartum Doulas: Some doulas specialize in supporting women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, including providing assistance with breastfeeding.
  5. Breastfeeding Support Groups: Vancouver has various breastfeeding support groups where mothers can meet and share their experiences, receive guidance, and get support from other breastfeeding mothers.
  6. Hospitals and Birthing Centers: Many hospitals and birthing centers in Vancouver have lactation consultants on staff to help mothers with breastfeeding right after delivery and during their postpartum stay.
  7. Private Lactation Consultants: There are private lactation consultants who offer one-on-one breastfeeding support and personalized care for mothers who prefer individualized assistance.

It’s important to note that the qualifications and certifications of lactation specialists can vary, so it’s a good idea to inquire about a lactation specialist’s specific credentials and training before seeking their assistance.  Our clinic has partnered with a few consultants who are physicians with extensive family medicine backgrounds.  We highly recommend them as their practices and suggestions are usually supported by scientific research.

My daughter had a wonderful experience with Dr. Phoebe and her dedicated team. She is meticulous, careful, and wholeheartedly committed. She explained all the necessary treatments for my daughter and provided the most helpful advice tailored to her age and specific condition, ensuring my daughter felt no pressure during her dental care. In addition, Dr. Phoebe is incredibly friendly and genuinely loves children. She transformed the fear that many kids—and even some adults—often feel about dental visits into a positive experience. This is a clinic truly worth sharing with others so they can also visit and experience such excellent care.

Highly recommend Dr Tsang and her team. Dental procedures can be very scary, especially for your little one, and biggest fear is if the dental team is over charging or over prescribing. I can honestly say you can trust Dr Tsang and her team. I was impressed by the patience and gentle approach she used when explaining all our options, answering my list: if questions. She did not automatically overprescribe yet she understands what’s needed to ensure my 5 year old daughter left with the best experience. My daughter used oral sedation with Midazolam (Short acting Benzo that is easily reversible and safe) which is much less invasive than general anesthetic route often recommended by other pediatric dentists first As well Dr Tsang was honest when updated X-rays were taken that there were fewer than needed cavities to be filled than we had expected Not to mention they had so many goodies and prizes for my daughter throughout the various steps of process, that she left as if she just went to a birthday party. To summarize, if you’re looking for a very knowledgeable but humble professional, whom you can trust to not over prescribe yet is willing to ensure your child has the most comfortable and positive dentistry experience, Dr Tsang and her team embodies all those traits above.

Our 2.5-year-old son, Howard, recently started experiencing pain in his upper right back teeth. Concerned, we took him to a nearby general dentist, who, after a thorough examination, referred us to a pediatric dental specialist, Dr. Phoebe Tsang. To our surprise, Howard had extensive dental issues, requiring treatment for 14 teeth through surgery. As parents, we felt deeply sorry that he had been enduring more discomfort than we had realized, especially since he was too young to fully express his pain. Howard had been drinking milk at night since birth, and we were unaware of the significant impact it could have on his teeth. However, after our initial visit to the general dentist, he successfully transitioned away from night bottles. Determined to provide him with the best care, we made the one-hour drive from White Rock to see Dr. Tsang. From the moment we arrived, Dr. Tsang and her team were incredibly professional, compassionate, and gentle with Howard. Dr. Tsang herself is not only highly knowledgeable but also exceptionally skilled in pediatric dentistry. We feel truly fortunate to have had her perform Howard’s surgery. Yesterday, on March 18, 2025, Dr. Tsang and anesthesiologist Dr. Robert carried out Howard’s procedure with exceptional expertise and care. We are incredibly grateful for their dedication. Post-surgery, Howard has been recovering well—he is experiencing minimal discomfort and has been able to drink formula and eat soft foods comfortably. This was Howard’s first surgery, and under Dr. Tsang’s guidance, we are confident that he will continue to improve and eat with ease. We sincerely appreciate the outstanding care provided by Dr. Tsang and her team and wholeheartedly recommend her to any parents seeking a skilled pediatric dentist for their child’s dental needs. Best wishes from Eileen and families :)

Highly recommended Dr Phoebe Tsang! Our 5 year old son was very anxious at our local dentist and we did not want him going under anesthetic for his teeth. Thankfully we got a referral to Pediatric Dental Specialist Dr Tsang, who uses conscious sedation. From the first FaceTime consultation, she was so kind! Our son was at ease and really looked forward to meeting her. She thoroughly explained the procedure and answered all our questions with patience. She is unbelievably knowledgeable and gave us reassurance that everything would go well. Upon arrival at her beautiful office, we were greeted with the utmost love from not only her but her whole team. Being in her care was top of the line, we cannot thank her enough for making this go so smooth for our family. If your children need dental work done, look no further. I guarantee you, she is the absolute best you will find!

My 4 year old son has many sensory issues and brushing his teeth was absolutely impossible, which is what brought us to Dr Tsang. He needed a ton of work done for his mouth to be healthy again. I was blown away by her and her staff from start to finish. She treated my son so well and I was so impressed with her efforts to connect with him in a way that would work for him. He did need dental surgery, which scared me but all the questions I had were answered so quickly and there was a great deal of communication from his first appointment, all the way up to the surgery. You can tell how much Dr Tsang and her staff care about their patients. I couldn't be happier with my son's care. I truly recommend Dr Tsang and staff if your child needs dental work done. They have so much compassion and throughout the entire process I felt like my son was in great hands. I'm so thankful to everyone who worked with him and those I had contact with over many months. This was a very stressful situation for me and it was made so much better by everyone there.
